Dec 2013 Merry Christmas

Wow, it’s that time of the year again. We all ask, “Where did the year go?” How can it be Christmas already? And this year, the war on Christmas has already started, we hear about it on the news, in the stores, in the schools how we can’t mention Merry Christmas, or we can’t sing “religious” Christmas songs, etc, etc.

On a commercial that was advertising the big Christmas sales, and how you can run into the store and get your Christmas and then go home. Then I heard how some of the families that have been affected may not have Christmas this year because they lost everything. Wow, is that where Christmas is, is that what Christmas is all about? Have we turned this season of celebration into nothing more than presents under a tree, pure materialism?

Yes, we have. Even us Christians have, we are in on it as much as the rest of the world. I believe we have lost the true meaning of Christmas, even if it wasn’t our holiday in the first place, it is now, and we have moved the truth of the birth of Christ to second place under Santa and shopping, presents and eating. I believe we have forgotten:

Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.” “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.

(Luke 1:29–35, NIV84)

With this in our hearts, that it is all about Jesus, there is NO way that we can’t have Christmas! It is impossible not to be able to celebrate because it is a faith issue not a ceremony, tradition, buying presents with a guy in a red suit thing! It is:

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.”

(Luke 2:8–14, NIV84)
