Ten Dumb Things Smart Christians Believe Sermon Series for the Summer

Paul tells us in II Timothy,“All Scripture is God breathed and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (II Tim 3:16-17) I think this can be applied to us today in the fact that God wants us to be clear about what He says so that we don’ t state something that is a heresy or contradicts who He is. Paul would tell Timothy, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth”(II Tim 2:15)

Sometimes we say things that sound Biblical but are not, for example how many times have we heard someone say, “Cleanliness is next to godliness.” Sounds good, but has no Biblical foundation. Or another one, “God won’t give you more than you can handle.” Really, if I can handle everything I wouldn't need God in my life. These statements are “spiritual-urban-legends,” they sound good but are not true. Weall have stories that we thought were true, then some brave soul came along and lovingly corrected us. It is ok, even very intelligent people believe dumb things once in a while, like Napoleon who for some strange reason thought that the harsh Russian winter wouldn’t harm his troops. Or, the otherwise brilliant leadership team of IBM who bet the farm on mainframes and practically gave away the PC as well as the underlying operating system to a young programmer named Bill Gates.

Here are the topics that wewill be discussing in no particular order:
